Drive from Kashgar, hike to the base of Shipton’s Arch, the world’s tallest natural arch
Shipton’s Arch is the world’s highest natural arch – an imposing, entirely natural limestone structure that rises an astonishing 500 meters (1,500 feet) above the surrounding valley. Named after British mountaineer Eric Shipton, who first documented it in 1947, this hidden giant remained largely unknown to the outside world for decades due to its remote location in the Pamir Mountains.
After a scenic 1.5-hour drive from Kashgar through Uyghur villages, enjoy a 1 hour and 20 minute hike to the base. The trail involves gentle climbing over rocky terrain and is suitable for all ages with reasonable fitness.
At the base, marvel at the arch’s overwhelming scale framing snow-capped Pamir peaks. Your guide will share stories of Shipton’s discovery and local legends. After exploring and taking photos, hike back down and return to Kashgar.
