After breakfast, we drive to the breathtaking Heavenly Lake (Tianchi), a stunning alpine lake nestled high in the Tianshan Mountains. The crystal-clear blue waters are perfectly framed by dense pine forests and majestic snow-capped peaks, creating a scene of pure alpine serenity. You can take a leisurely walk along the lake’s edge, breathe in the crisp mountain air, or opt for a peaceful boat ride to fully appreciate the pristine beauty. The reflection of Bogda Feng (Sacred Peak) in the still waters is an unforgettable sight. After soaking in the tranquility of the lake, we continue our drive to the town of Dushanzi, where we will stay overnight. The journey offers a changing landscape as we descend from the mountains into the oil-rich region.

Today, we embark on one of China’s most spectacular mountain drives: the northern section of the legendary Duku Highway. This engineering marvel winds its way through dramatic canyons, towering peaks, and lush valleys. Our first major stop is the impressive Dushanzi Grand Canyon. Carved over millennia by the river, this deep, dramatic gorge features striking geological formations and layered red-and-brown cliffs that drop sharply to the valley floor below. It’s a photographer’s paradise. From here, we continue along the winding highway, surrounded by breathtaking mountain scenery at every turn. We will cross high passes, pass by cascading waterfalls, and witness the raw power of nature before arriving in the beautiful grassland town of Narat.

After breakfast, we visit the famous Kongzhong Caoyuan, or “Sky Grassland.” As its name suggests, this is a vast, high-altitude grassland that seems to float above the clouds, surrounded by snow-capped mountains and rolling hills. It is a place of immense, peaceful beauty. You can enjoy a gentle walk across the soft, green meadows, watch local Kazakh herders with their flocks, and simply take in the stunning, panoramic views that stretch to the horizon. The feeling of standing atop the world is unforgettable. After lunch, we drive from Narat to the historic city of Yining. Upon arrival, you’ll check into your hotel. The evening is free for you to explore at your leisure. Wander down charming Liuxing Street with its distinctive architecture or immerse yourself in the Uighur culture of the Kazanqi Folk Area, where traditional courtyard homes and lively markets await.

Full circle driving tour around Sayram Lake, stop at best viewpoints
Today is dedicated to Sayram Lake, arguably the most beautiful alpine lake in all of Xinjiang. Known as the “Pearl of the Tianshan Mountains,” its waters are a mesmerizing shade of crystalline blue, shifting in hue with the angle of the sun. We will do a complete circle driving tour around the entire lake, stopping at all the best viewpoints. Each stop offers a different perspective: from the rocky western shore where wildflowers bloom in summer, to the grassy northern banks with distant snow peaks, to the eastern side where the water appears impossibly deep and calm. The pure, untouched beauty of Sayram is a soul-refreshing experience. After a full day of exploration, we return to Yining for another comfortable overnight stay.

Morning flight to Kucha, explore the dramatic Kucha Tianshan Grand Canyon
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for a short morning flight from Yining to Kucha, an ancient Buddhist center on the historic Silk Road. Upon arrival, we drive directly to the magnificent Kucha Tianshan Grand Canyon. Unlike the green landscapes we have seen, this is a world of fiery red sandstone. The canyon features dramatic, towering cliffs that narrow into winding, sculpted passageways. You will explore the canyon on foot, walking deep into its heart where the walls rise hundreds of meters on either side. The play of light and shadow on the textured rock faces creates an ever-changing, almost otherworldly atmosphere. It is a powerful and humbling encounter with nature’s artistic forces.

Alternatively, you may opt to visit the Kizil Thousand Buddha Caves (optional, entrance fee not included), one of China’s oldest Buddhist cave complexes. The caves feature stunning murals that blend Indian, Persian, and local artistic traditions, telling stories of the Buddha’s past lives. After lunch and a final taste of Kucha’s historical depth, we drive to the city of Aksu, our overnight stop.

This morning, we visit the lesser-known but equally spectacular Wensu Grand Canyon. Often bypassed by tourists, this hidden gem offers a more rugged and intimate canyon experience. Its colorful rock formations — in shades of deep red, ochre, yellow, and white — have been sculpted by wind and water into fantastic shapes. There are no large crowds here, just you and the immense, silent beauty of the landscape. You can wander along the canyon floor, feeling a true sense of discovery and solitude. After exploring, we continue our long but rewarding drive to the legendary oasis city of Kashgar, the spiritual heart of Uighur culture and the crown jewel of the southern Silk Road.

Today, we immerse ourselves in the rich, timeless culture of Kashgar. Our exploration begins in the labyrinthine alleys of the Kashgar Old City, where life has remained largely unchanged for centuries. The mud-brick architecture, the sound of artisans at work, and the friendly faces of the locals create an unforgettable atmosphere. We will wander down the vibrant Handicraft Street, where you can watch skilled craftspeople creating exquisite traditional musical instruments, intricately designed teapots, and other handcrafted treasures passed down through generations. Next, we visit the Id Kah Mosque, the largest mosque in China, a serene and important spiritual center. No visit is complete without stopping at the famous Hundred-Year-Old Tea House, where you can climb the creaking stairs, relax on a shaded balcony, and sip local medicinal teas infused with rose, saffron, honey, and other aromatic ingredients. As evening falls, we dive into the lively Hambazar Night Market, a feast for the senses with sizzling street food, smoky kebabs, and the energetic chatter of locals and travelers alike.

Drive the legendary Karakoram Highway, visit Baisha Lake and Karakul Lake
Today, we leave Kashgar and embark on one of the world’s most spectacular journeys: the Karakoram Highway. This modern marvel winds its way through the stunning Pamir Plateau, heading towards the high-altitude town of Tashkorgan. Our first major stop is the ethereal Baisha Lake, whose milky turquoise waters are framed by stark, brilliant white sand dunes that rise directly from the shore. It looks almost surreal. Continuing our ascent, we arrive at the breathtaking Karakul Lake, situated at an elevation of 3,600 meters. Here, the majestic Muztagh Ata (Father of the Ice Mountain) is perfectly reflected in the lake’s crystal-clear, deep blue waters. The air is crisp and pure, and the surrounding landscape of towering peaks and open grasslands is nothing short of awe-inspiring. We will stop to take photos and absorb the spiritual energy of this incredible place before continuing to Tashkorgan for the night.

Perched on a rocky outcrop, its crumbling walls offer panoramic, sweeping views of the surrounding mountains and the wide, windswept valleys below. Walking among the ruins, you can feel the weight of centuries of Silk Road history. Adjacent to the fort lies the beautiful Golden Grassland, a vast, open expanse of green that stretches to the foot of the distant peaks. It is the perfect place for a peaceful, meditative walk, surrounded by the quiet beauty of the high plateau. You may see local Tajik herders with their yaks and sheep, adding a touch of living culture to the ancient landscape. After this serene experience, we begin our scenic drive back to Kashgar, retracing the Karakoram Highway with perhaps a final chance to say goodbye to the majestic mountains.
