10-Day Silk Road Tour from Xi'an to Urumqi

Day 1, Arrive in Xi’an

Activities: Pick up you from airport and transfer to your Hotel
Details:Our professional, friendly local guide will meet you with experienced driver at the airport and transfer to your hotel. It takes about one hour to your hotel from airport. Rest of the day is your time to explore this ancient city by yourself.
It is said, if you want to see 800 years of China’s history, visit Beijing; if you want to see 3000 years of China’s history, go to Xi’an. The root of Chinese history and culture remains there. It used to be the ancient capital of many dynasties and the starting point of Silk Road of China.

Day 2, Explore Xi’an For Whole Day

Activities: Visit Terra-Cotta Warriors; Bell Tower; Wild Goose Pagoda and Hui Mosque
Details:After breakfast, we start our wonderful one day tour with a visit to Terra-Cotta Warriors which is one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. This site is about an hour drive from Xi’an city.
After lunch Visit Bell tower which is located in downtown area. it is a Chinese traditional building and geographical center of the ancient capital, best preserved and largest wooden tower in China.
After an hour here we continue our tour to wild goose Pagoda which is a well preserved ancient holy building for Buddhism.
Finally visit Hui grand mosque located in Hui minority area, construction of the mosque has rich Chinese features combined with Arabic style. It is one of the oldest and largest mosque in China.

Day 3, Xi’an to Zhangye

Activities: After breakfast, travel by high-speed train to Zhangye and visit Matisi Temple.
Details:After breakfast at your hotel, transfer to the train station and take the high-speed bullet train to Zhangye—a scenic journey of approximately 5–6 hours through the beautiful landscapes of northwest China.
Upon arrival in Zhangye, you will be met by your local guide and proceed to visit the fascinating Matisi Temple (Horse Hoof Temple) . This unique temple complex is famous for its grottoes carved into the cliff face, combining Buddhist art with stunning natural scenery. The name “Horse Hoof” comes from a legend that a heavenly horse left a hoof print on one of the rocks inside the temple.
Explore the ancient caves, hanging temples, and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and grasslands. The site offers a peaceful and spiritual atmosphere, rich with history dating back over 1,600 years.
After the tour, you will be transferred to your hotel in Zhangye for check-in and overnight stay.

Day 4, Zhangye to Jiayuguan

Activities: After breakfast visit Danxia GeoPark and then drive to Jiayuguan
Details:After Breakfast drive to Zhangye Danxia geopark (rain bow mountain ) where you can see different colors of the mountain and the view is different at different times.the scenery here is really fantastic and incredible.
After lunch drive to Jiayuguan which takes about 2:30 hours.

Day 5, Jiayuguan to Dunhuang

Activities: Visit Jiayuguan Fort (pass), Great wall museum, and then drive to Dunhuang and visit Crescent lake
Details:After breakfast explore some exciting sites around Jiayugaun, first visit Jiayuguan pass (Jiayuguan Fort) also known as the “Impregnable Pass under Heaven,” Jiayuguan is the western end of the Great Wall of the Ming Dynasty as well as the most magnificent and well-preserved pass among over a thousand passes along the Ming Great Wall.
Then stop at Great Wall Museum which is one of the first museums to give a comprehensive and systematic understanding of the history of the Great Wall.
Then drive to Dunhuang which takes around 5 hours. Once arrive in Dunhuang First visit Mysterious Crescent lake which its name derives from the crescent moon shaped by the small pool of spring water between two large sand dunes. Here you’ll have chance to ride camels across the sand dunes of Sounding Sand mountain which makes sounds when the wind blows(camel is on your own expenses). If you like you can stay till sunset and back to the hotel later

Day 6, Dunhuang to Turpan

Activities: After breakfast Visit Mogao Grottoes; After lunch fast speed train to Turpan
Details:We spend the whole morning at Mogao Grottoes which were constructed over a millennium ago from the 4th to 14th centuries. The caves are also known as the Thousand Buddha Caves with two distinctions of being one of the most notable grottoes in China as well as the best-preserved treasure house of Buddhist art, sutras, murals and sculptures in the world.
After lunch drive Dunhuang fast speed train station for your journey to Turpan which is about 3:30 hours train ride. Our Turpan local driver/guide will pick up you from Turpan railway station and transfer to your hotel

Day 7, Turpan tours

Activities: Visit Tuyuq village, Hiking near Tuyuq Valley, Flaming Mountain and Bizeklik Thousand Budha Caves
Details:After breakfast at your hotel, your full-day Turpan adventure begins. You’ll first drive to the historic Tuyuq Village, one of the oldest settlements in the region, nestled in a scenic valley. Upon arrival, enjoy a warm welcome and a delicious homemade lunch at a local Uyghur family’s home, offering an authentic taste of traditional hospitality.
After lunch, take a leisurely walk through the ancient streets of Tuyuq Village, where time seems to stand still amid centuries-old homes and peaceful surroundings. Then, embark on a scenic hike through Tuyuq Valley, following the river and taking in the dramatic desert landscape.
Next, visit the Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, a stunning complex of Buddhist grottoes adorned with ancient murals that tell stories of the Silk Road’s spiritual and cultural history.
On your way back to the city, make a brief stop along the roadside to capture breathtaking photos of the Flaming Mountain, renowned for its fiery red hills and extreme temperatures—one of the hottest places on Earth.
At the end of the day, you’ll be transferred back to your hotel in Turpan for a relaxing overnight stay.

Day 8, Turpan to Urumqi

Activities: After family breakfast , visit Yargul (Jiaohe) Ancient city, Karez underground Irrigations system and Emin Minaret . Drive to Urumqi in the afternoon
Details:After typical local Uighur breakfast at the family, you will have chance to walk around the village for a few hours.
We start our tour in Turpan with a visit to Yargul (Jiaohe) Ancient city which is one of the best preserved ancient cities in China. The ruins of the buildings are divided into temples, civilian dwellings and government offices. Workshops, residential houses and the streets are still visible and time there is a time spent in a long lost world.
After an hour of seeing around the ancient city, we’ll head on to see the world famous Karez irrigation system, unique to this part of the world. The system is considered as one of the three great projects in China with the other two being the Great Wall and the Grand Canal.
Then visit  Emin Suliman minaret which is a magnificent combination of ancient Uighur and Islamic architecture. It is the tallest ancient tower in Xinjiang and the only Islamic ancient minaret in the country. Locals call it “pure tower.”
Later in the afternoon drive to Urumqi

Day 9, Day Trip to Heavenly Lake, Visit Xinjiang Museum and Dongkuruk Grand Bazaar

Activities: Visit Xinjiang Provincial Museum, then Drive to Heavenly lake; Spend time around Dongkuruk Erdaoqiao Grand Bazaar in the evening.
Details:After breakfast Our guide and driver see you at the hotel lobby and visit the Xinjiang Museum which houses an impressive collection of exhibits, covering artifacts and relics from more than 12 minority groups. By this way you have some understanding about Xinjiang and the Silk Road
Then Leave for Heavenly Lake after which is 115 kms (71 Miles) over two hours by vehicle.
This beautiful and crystal-clear waters of Heavenly Lake is guarded by the Tianshan mountain and once you are at the like, you will have free time to roam around the lake, simply trekking up the mountains through the various valleys as long as you want. You can go for boating or take cable car (own expense) up to the top of the mountain for full scenery of the lake.
whenever you are ready at the lake, drive to Urumqi city and spend time around Dongkuruk Erdaoqiao Grand Bazaar which which is the Minority center of Urumqi.

Day 10, Urumqi To Your Destination

Activities: See you off at Urumqi airport
